Assistant Provost Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Associate Professor Management, Baker School of Businesss, and Director of Truth Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Center
Driven by the call to “increase human thriving in the workplace,” Dr. J specializes in workplace inclusion, with emphasis on teams, higher education, veterans, and workplace spirituality and religion. Her research is published in the book (Beyond Inclusion, 2014, Palgrave Macmillan) and several other chapters, journal articles, and research reports. Smith is presently editing a book on spirituality and religion in the workplace (Blessed are Those Who Ask the Questions, est. 2020, Information Age Publishing). Starting as an Information Technology consultant 28 years ago, Smith slowly transitioned into the field of diversity and inclusion, engaging with organizations including, but not limited to: Boeing Corporation Talent Management, NASA Lewis Lab, Naval Base Ventura County (Point Mugu), Sherwin-Williams, CHEF, Naval Base Pensacola NROTC COs/XOs, The Cleveland Clinic, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, University at Albany, Chapman University, SUNY Albany, KeyBank, First Federal Lakewood, and The Cleveland Indians. A career-changing highlight was being awarded an Office of Naval Research Faculty Summer Fellowship to research barriers to inclusion for Latina and Latino service members.Smith holds Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Spelman College. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and American Mensa. She sits on the boards of The Foundation for Justice and Peace, The Children’s Trust of South Carolina, and the Charleston Interreligious Council. She is a member of the Sophia Institute’s Social Justice and Racial Equity Committee’s Steering Committee for TRHT. She serves as a Steward, the YPD Director, and as a Licentiate at Greater St. Luke AME Church in Charleston.
In 2015, Dr. J. Goosby Smith relocated from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California to Charleston, SC where she became a dual-reporting faculty member in The Citadel’s Baker School of Business and the Department of Leadership Studies. Since July of 2018, she has served as Assistant Provost of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She is also Director of The Citadel’s Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Center.
A native of Gary, IN, Dr. J lives in Charleston and is the proud mom of 31 year-old Daniel, 15 year-old Aiah, and her 12 year-old yellow lab, Cassius Marcellus Clay, II.
